Introduction

The term "tanking" is used to refer to the action of taking the hits from any kind of monster (bosses,mobs) for a party. It is the job of the tanker to make sure that monsters will not attack anyone else other than themselves; they do this by keeping "aggro" (a term which we will get to later). Due to this, most of the time the tanker must have the defense and health necessary in order to survive many hits from monsters so the role of the tanker is usually the Fighter. However, there have been instances where the role of the tanker has been given to other classes, like the Mage, because no other effective fighter is available. Furthermore, all the other classes can tank, however they are limited to the amount of aggro that they can generate and keep.

Stats

STR: Not really needed for tanking better invest in other stats.

INT: Again not needed.

END: A very important stat it increases physical attacks (the main attack of most bosses).

SPR: It helps with magic defense a which can help with some boss' special attacks.

DEX: This adds some protection via dodging rate this stats is decent for tanking.

Gear/Items

This section is about what kinds of weapons and/or armor that a tank will use in order to "tank" to his/her fullest. Let's start by defining the types of armor and weapons (taken from the weapons page):

White: Standard: can be purchased though an NPC. All standard weapons have no added points to abilities and have the same base stats.

Green: Uncommon: These can be obtained from monster drops and are more powerful then the standard white. You may also wish to purchase these from other players because some can prove to be very powerful. Greens have a maximum of (min. level for usage divided by 2) as their cap. on added stats. eg- a Green weapon that you can first use at level 100. may have a maximum of 50 added points in any given statistic (50 End, 50 Str, ,50 Spr, 50 Dex, 50 Int)

Blue: Rare: These can be obtained from KQs (Kingdom Quests) like Giant Honeying and are more powerful than greens because they have better stat boosts, critical rate, damage etc... However, there are currently only 1 kind for each job per levels 50 and 70 but will have different stat boosts.

Special Named Greens: Rare: Also very rare, these kinds should be in the same realm as Blues because they are more powerful then their regular green counterparts but are dropped by either Boss or Elite monsters. They have part of the name of the mob that drops them in the weapon/armor name. An example is the "Staff of the Bellowed Knight".

Purple: Very Rare: These are in a category of their own because they prove to not only have regular stat boosts but also a fixed boost in HP, SP or CRIT % and may improve your abilities when collected in sets. Armor= +HP Pants= +SP Boots= +CRIT. Note that Cash Shop items are also purple-named.

Orange: Extremely Rare: Even rarer than blues, Orange items are difficult to find. Some examples of these are the Hellgait items (which drop from one of the strongest monsters in the game and used to spawn only once-a-day) which are very powerful because their power and stat-boosts are unmatched (many are 5x more powerful then regulars. In fact, there are calls for them to be nerfed due to their negative-impact on PvP)

As you can see the further you go down the list the more potent the armors/weapons become. In general tanks are looking for END and SPR and DEX can also be a small benefit because of its dodging boost. But mainly tanks require END because it boosts their physical defense up and because most bosses employ powerful physical attacks this decreases their damage greatly.

Main Concepts

Blocking/Dodging

In order to maximize your tanking ability you should increase you chances of blocking of dodging this is because when you are tanking every time you dodge and/or block a monsters attack you decrease the damage by 100% (not bad) and for every time you do this you can survive that much longer. For example, in this case study we will explore the power of dodging and blocking:

Lets say your the main tank for a Kingdom Quest and you are up against a boss that hits 700 damage for every normal shot and double for every special attack. This boss will attack with a special every 3 attacks (normal, normal, normal, special). Assuming you have a blocking rate of 5% for your shield + 5% because you maxed out you END + a whooping 15% from the skill toughness + and 5% evasion rate you'll have a possible 28.75% dodge and block rate (including the possible overlap of evasion) that's 23 blocks/dodges for every 80 attacks so at best you can dodge/block all the special attacks and 3 normal attacks which amounts to 30100 damage avoided!!!

Main Tank is the tank that fights the most in a party or kingdom quest. Main Tank is usually a high lvl with good stats or anyone that has the best def in the group
