Basically, you need to stop your character while it's still moving on the map. The poor cleric pictured in the series of screenshots did not do so, and ended up 'standing' on nothing. Once the character is floating this way, if you jump, they will fall through because there is no floor to fall onto.
By 'returning' I mean performing re-login twice: once to return to an empty map, twice to return to Roumen. Then you'll travel to Elderine. Then, you'll move your character to the very same spot they were standing on, where they started to move off. Tap the directions in the vicinity and you should find your character moving off again.
This spot of doom I am referring to is a certain location on the map that is about the size of a mushroom house, on which your character will spontaneously travel in the south-west direction on top of all objects along the way. If you move your character into that spot, they will start to move. If you then promptly move your character, they will return to their static position, but your character will always veer off on their own if you move them there. This spot will change every time you restart the client, and appears to drift slowly even when you're next to it and messing with it.
If you look at my images, I opened a vendor next to a spot that I discovered; a while later, I checked on it, and lo and behold Fission was struck.
By the way, once the character is at the edge of the map, there is no returning. You're guaranteed a twice-respawn off to Roumen.
