Why do we call them mobs?

…i only call them mobs because everyone else does, which somewhat reminds me of when i was making fun of this one guy that kept wanting me to power level him because the first ten or so levels were somehow hard for him, jokingly saying that everyone had been power leveled to get to whatever level they currently are, and the first person was maybe a GM or something… it was a month or so ago, so i don't really remember how it went, but it was probably something like that
