Not to spark a weed debate but I truely now believe that they keep it illegal because it opens peoples minds to questioning authority, and government actions. Now ciggarettes, far more harmful, cause huge profits in the industry of death, and imo, are kept legal to keep population down... something that weed couldn't do for them.

They keep it illegal for several reasons. Alcohol and tobacco lobbies dump tons of money into elected official's pockets in order to keep it off the market. Also, it would open up industrial hemp production and the cotton lobby doesn't care for that. Also, there's the law enforcement angle. The War on Drugs makes a LOT of money flow around town, with the weapons and salaries (I won't even mention the private prisons).
Simply put, there is a lot of monetary interest in keeping it illegal and no elected official has been convinced they'll get MORE money from legalizing it.
