It should save your progress when you shutdown/restart or whatever. It should automatically create a work folder in whatever directory you run the client from and save everything in there. If it isn't making one then it might be defaulting to the one that was made for the graphical version if you didn't remove that folder. I dunno, but it definitely should save your progress when you close and pick up where it left off next time you run it.

I rarely use the text only client; only if the graphical one causes a problem in something else. So far the only problems I've come across is when playing Diablo or Gunbound and I rarely ever play either game so I use the graphical version most of the time. The two are interchangeable for me though, if I shut down the graphical version and start the text version they still work on the same WU.
