I think quite a bit went missing in the 9/11 charities, too. I'd stick to the big players, at least for large-scale operations like this. The Red Cross is a great one. They're a class act. Helped me out quite a bit during Hurricane Rita when I was displaced for a couple of months.

No, they aren't the same thing at all. The Salvation Army is an evangelical Christian organization. Their outreach usually comes with a healthy dose of "come to Jesus". The Red Cross is generally broadly humanitarian in nature.
