Abysses are like dungeons, Only the PvP is allowed there, While it may seem like a good deal because most Abysses are so close to the towns, When you are killed by another player in the Abyss, Exp loss DOES happen.
No quest requires you to enter the Abyss, And it is not mandatory to enter, Though exp, drops, and number of mobs are usually increased there, For the obvious dangers.
