It adds a + sign next to their name.....

When someone signs up, and i think there's a place that they say who invited them to the forum.. if they put your name down then you've got 1 referral

Like Blaaaaah said they basically have no purpose that i know of but I think they are just to say "Hey this is a guy thats cool to talk to" something like that
