Thanks for your feedback. The reason we did this was to open the contest to more people, rather than artistically talented people with knowledge of graphic programs like Photoshop. We've had several other "designing" contests such as designing banners and signatures. We feel it will really be unfair for the rest of the community whose interest does not lie in art, so they will not be able to have a fair chance at winning the contests compared to those who have extended knowledge on graphical programs prior to the event.
Sometimes, people have the imagination but not the skills to present it in a nice and 'profesional' way. Also, more often than not, there are many artistically talented people out there who lack the imagination. The purpose of this contest was to allow members to use their imagination and creativity to win this contest, and not artistic skills.
Hopefully that will give you some insight on our decision on this. We may consider another event focusing on artistic skills if many members of the community express interest in this.
