W7 is much more than an aesthetic upgrade. It's everything that Vista should have been.
On a machine with just 512MB RAM:
If your box can run Vista, Windows 7 will literally fly. Those who have switched to 7 have never looked back at XP. I personally will adopt Win 7 when I upgrade my machine.
A common misconception about Vista is that it's just an "upgrade" variant of XP with glassy looks: well, it's kind of true for the RTM but after SP1 was released, Vista became a different OS from XP because on top of the stability and security fixes, the kernel was improved. Win7 carried on this kernel improvement.
