It increases the little green bars in your mini-profile. In general terms on forums, they're used as a quick way to see which members the other members respect and/or value. However, due to some rep-inflating shenanigans in the early days of FiestaFan, they mean absolutely nothing whatsoever.

A single +Rep used to give an astronomical number of points. One shot from a greened-up user used to send you from 0 to 3-4 rep bars.

There was a poll up a long time ago to see if we should revert rep to base levels. Maybe it would have made the feature more meaningful.

Of course, the poll was voted on by the people who benefited from the inflated numbers, so they naturally didn't vote to give up what they'd been granted.

Ah well. It's only human nature, I suppose.
