I have started to reply a couple of times, but was always in a hurry & didn’t have enough time for my Wall of text. Today I had time so get ready:

I don't understand turning against people because they are gay, but then again, I don't think I am typical for my age bracket. But I especially don’t understand turning against your child because they are gay.

I did, as many parents would, hope that my kids were not gay as they grew up, but not because I have anything against gay people but rather because I know society puts too much stock in a persons sexual orientation and adds to the struggles of growing up, and lord knows, there's enough to deal with growing up as it is. But I truly believe in my heart of hearts that had either of my children been gay I would still love them just as much because they are my children. They did not choose to be gay but were born that way.

(Note here: I believe my ex-husband would have turned against them for being gay, but that’s because he is a close-minded ass anyway. I don’t believe my present husband, Spirit’s Papa-Bear, would have turned against them because he too understands gay people are born gay. He has, and had, gay family members and we have had gay friends that we have socialized with in the past where we might be the only straight people in a group of 12 or more, so he would understand and accept.)

On the bright side, one day through natural attrition, there will be less close-minded people and you will not have family turning on family for being gay.

As for the vote, I don’t see not allowing the marriages to be a benefit to anyone really. Many gay couples live together anyway, the same as many straight couples. And, some corporations already offer insurance benefits to “partners”. So not allowing it does not really make much difference, it just stands in the way of those people who like the concept of a piece of paper binding you through agreement. Me personally, I have always been okay with the “just live together” concept unless you plan to have kids, and then I think you owe it to the kids to be married to save them from being ridiculed by mean kids, but otherwise a relationship built on love should be able to sustain simply on love. And, yes, I have married twice, but truth be told, I lived with both husbands before we married and was happy with that arrangement, but both times we got the paper to make the rest of the families (in both cases) happy since so many of them felt that living together was just “living in sin”, but that is a whole other Mature Discussion theme.

And lawyers should be out lobbying for legalization because that just adds more opportunity for them to charge out the ass for another divorce.

All that to say, I guess I’m more libertarian and I would vote to allow same sex marriage, but more so, just as with abortion, I don’t think it is something that should be allowed or disallowed based on politicians votes or the voting that is open to so many ignorant people in this world. Those should both be personal choice matters.

They're not threatening to do anything physically to the companies, just release data about who contributed to the other group and probably try to organize a boycott. The fundie Christians in this country looove a boycott. To be perfectly honest, I'm surprised that the companies donated in the first place. Most avoid hot-button issues in order not to alienate any potential customer.

I dont think its up to a 3rd party to decide if someone's name should be released to support a group. Seriously, it's none of their business!

And it sounds like they want to publicised their name regardless of how much they have donated.... You may not have been a big supporter, but they're going to "black list" you anyway...

When you donate, you'd only think "is this a good cause, is it worth giving money to"... I didn't think many people would think "if I donate to them, will I offend anyone else"....

That's the difference between donating as an individual and donating as a company/business. When you're in business, you either donate to both sides or don't donate at all so you're not alienating your customer base. That's basically what this letter is saying, either pony up to us as much as you've given them, or we'll broadcast your business names from the rooftops labeling you "anti-family."

It smells a bit of extortion, but like I said earlier, it still puzzles me why they would have donated in the first place to something like this.
