Actually, the only pain was the numbing of the ear lobe with the ice - ice hurts after a while - lol.

Dunno. Guess at that age we had the strength to push that needle hard enough to get it to go through without any problems.
Of course the reason for the potato is because once you get the needle to extend out the back you had a hard time grabbing the pointed end and actually pulling it on through - one because it is tapered to the point and additionally it was now moist and harder to hold but once you got it stuck into the potato it was hard to get out of the potato so the potato would pull it on through.
