Well, in Hrae's case, '?' is a variable, but ! is a symbol for factorial. And factorial is what Hrae showed in there: 4! = 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24
3! = 3 x 2 x 1 = 6. You get the drift, right?

I think usually a letter is used in place of the ?, as letter generally represents an unknown number..

Typically, yeah. A letter is generally used as a variable, but the conversation up to that point had been:

dcfash: ?
Vasu: ??
Tamashiiryuu: ?x3=???
Hraesvelg: Algebra fail. 3 x ? = 3?
Vasu: Yeah so: ? x ? x ? = ??? or ?^3

That's why I used ? as the variable, just to get to the punchline of ?!.
