Well, in Hrae's case, '?' is a variable, but ! is a symbol for factorial. And factorial is what Hrae showed in there: 4! = 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 24
3! = 3 x 2 x 1 = 6. You get the drift, right?

I think usually a letter is used in place of the ?, as letter generally represents an unknown number..
n x (n-1) x (n-2) x (n-3)...[(n+1)-n] = n!
