I can't take it anymore, I'm done.

Today at work, I realized that I'm done with hospital work.

I walk into my job, start getting things done, everything is going fine and well until the Security Guard walks into see me.

She comes over, sits down, then gets called off, but when she left, she ran down the hall... she never runs.

Next thing I hear, "Respiratory stat to ER, Respiratory stat to ER, Respiratory stat to ER."

Repeated codes three times means that it's no test, it's the real deal.

Meh. I brushed it off my shoulders.

Couldn't have been less than 5 minutes later, "Code Pink ER, Code Pink ER, Code Pink ER."

Code Pink = Cardiac Arrest for Adolescent.

A car wreck threw an 8 year old little girl out of her open window because she wasn't wearing a seat belt, and she died down the hall from me. The 2 year old infant was medlife transported to another hospital as well as the mother.

I was shaken up by hearing it, I don't know why. This is the 4th time I've had to deal with people dying like 2 inches from me.

While I was already tearing in my eyes about that girl, the phone rings, so I went to pick it up.

My mother is in the ER with my little brother, Kyle, and he's got an IV in his arm because he can't breathe, and they have no idea why.

I called downstairs immediately to see if I can shut the place down, and go be with Kyle, but all I was told was that I could have 15 minutes from the cook to cover me.

I took the 15 to find Kyle having the hardest time breathing I've ever seen, coughing nonstop, and trying to inhale the nebuliser.

I can't take it anymore, my last day working there is Sept 15th. I don't want to go back tomorrow.

When you work in a place like a hospital, you have to make commitments. I understand that you're feeling horrified that people are dying close to you, but when you start working at the hospital, you will be exposed to that. The amazing feeling of being able to save someone's life, over someone's life coming to an end. Your choice, to stay or go.

I'm sorry to hear you had such a bad day. I hope your brother is okay.

As for the other part, yeah, working in a hospital would suck and unless you have the genetic make-up that makes you less affected by the pain suffering & deaths, then yeah, might be better to find a job with no medical affiliation.

All I wanted to do was cook, I got the job from my Culinary Instructor.

Kyle is fine I guess he has some kind of Reactive something disease.

Wow. I've seen insane stuff in hospitals, but two things to hit someone like that in a row... What are the odds?

And yeah, that's why I know that I will never be a doctor of any sort even if I'm doing science. People (the less informed ones) usually think science = doctors, but that'll never be the case for me, because the stress and pressure doctors have to go through is ridiculous. @__@"

I'm sorry booyah D: I'm sure there are plenty of places where you could cook but not while being exposed to such... depressing situations.

I hope your brother is okay.

I could never be a nurse or a doctor. I don't like touching strangers, I wouldn't wanna be around sick people, I don't like to see blood, yeah... I'd be the doctor/nurse hiding in the broom closet.

I have worked off and on in the food industry for over 20 year, (I wasn't always a financial nerd). anyway I don't know where you live but i would suggest looking at a job working in the kitchen of a nice swanky type hotel.

The reason is that these hotels usually have several different restaurants in them from bars to fine dining eateries. This will give you an opportunity to see and experience different levels of food prep.

Since you already have experience under your belt you may even escape the dishwasher stage. I don't know why but almost every cook that I have met has started out as a dishwasher.

hope your brother is doing better and that you are able to get some place less stressful.

OMG Boo im so sorry to hear all that. I know it must be hard to have to expierience that, as i read this I almost cried. Guess im not cut out to work in a hospital either.

Stupid hospital people, "my family member might be serisouly hurt, i need to go" "Oh well give you 15 min" WTH that really pisses me off what if something more serisous was happening to them? I can see why they did that but still...

Hope it all works out for the best.

Btw I didnt know that you wanted to be a cook, just thought you worked at the hospital kitchen as a part-time or something.
