They're making money from "skins". Though I like riot skins better. They're skins are like you buy a bracer, or a hat, or a weapon, or a shoe, etc. While riot skins are the whole thing changed. Granted it's cheaper in dota2, but if you buy a full set it's probably the same as a skin in LoL. I like riot's quality better though. But now that I think about it, you dom people probably wont like it seeing as the games last a lot longer and the laning phase is also longer.

It's like Lirange says, you can buy hats as skins, they've become wildly popular for some reason. You can have all sorts of wacky hats from simple baseball caps to the weird drink hats, cowboy hats...

Imagine how ridiculous they would look on one of those DoTA heroes. Still, popular stuff is popular.
