On one layer, I made a giant black square. New Layer on top. Sketch it out in a different color. Then go back and erase the black to... form your image?
At first it was just going to be a lot more clean. But as I was erasing the part near the eye, I really liked how it looked with some bits there so I filled in the rest (not as well though). I also didn't erase very well around the elephant so I set it to have a thin stroke of white.
I pretty much did the same thing with the letters minus the sketching.
