I do understand that there are people out there that abuse alcohol and harm things / people.

The same thing that would happen if the case arose from drinking too much. I've never advocated a position of consequence-free using, merely that in a free society one should be able to choose what they put into their own body.

Granted, this is from a U.S. perspective. We've (generally, up until about 50 years or so ago) "erred" on the side of freedom. We don't want an oppressive Nanny State to take care of our every need and protect us from every harm. We'll make our own choices and mistakes.
