No I mean, smoking or not doesn't change what your genes are, so it doesn't affect the genes you give them? It only affects them via surrounding environment isn't it.

I kinda assumed that if the parents smokes, they have worse quality sperm / eggs so the kid might have more problems healthwise...

or is that just a myth?

It's a myth.. I don't get how that would work. You can't change your genes with your lifestyle, you can change your health.

I remember watching a canto show that featured a guy with really bad teeth, and then he got braces so that his kid would have perfect teeth. It doesn't work that way LOL. At least not to my knowledge....

Well I didn't get to read the whole article but I still don't really think it affects what you pass onto the offspring.

From the sound of the article, you can "turn-off" "bad" genes, but I would think the "bad" genes will still get passed onto your child and it's your child's lifestyle that would affect it.

Nvm, going back to basic science, it can actually happen:
http://www.ndsu.edu/pubweb/~mcclean/.../mutation2.htm
Quote:
If a gene is altered in a germ cell, the mutation is termed a germinal mutation. Because germ cells give rise to gametes, some gamete s will carry the mutation and it will be passed on to the next generation when the individual successfully mates.

I guess I'm not very clear on what "genes" are...

But like... I can see how your braces scenario doesn't work..

But if say a to-be-mum/dad has good calcium intake, wouldn't that MIGHT make their baby have healthier teeth or something?

Like having braces just alters the appearance, doesn't really change any cells in your body the way food/smoking/alcohol does...

Though, at the same time I think it probably doesn't make a HUGE difference... like maybe a dad is already carrying lung cancer pron genes, and if he smokes too it might make it worse.. but even if he doesn't smoke, he would still pass on the lung cancer pron genes to the kid....

I dont know, I'm just making stuff up LOLOL
