When a Fighter puts a put into END his defense is raised by one. So I can only assume its the same when putting a point into SPR. So if you're really desperate for one extra point of Magic Defense then by all means, go ahead and put a few points into SPR. Of course, I can't say it'll be a good idea but hey... whatever floats your boat, right? Anyways, good luck with your Mage. ;)
