I would think some GM's spawned them in there. They have a twisted sense of humor after all. But who can blame them, if I were in their shoes I'd find it funny that all these players are drawn to a treasure chest like a hungry pack of wolves.

Heck, I'd probably spawn hundreds in that area just to torture the players.
