I'm not sure if all version work the same, but if they want sequential numbers tell them to try right clicking the lower right corner of a cell and drag it to the end of the column or row they want to fill - when they stop dragging a menu should pop up and they just select series. If they want the same number, just left click the first cells lower right corner and drag to the end of the column or row they want to fill - this should fill all cells with the same number.

But, like I said, I'm not sure if all versions of Excel do that. My version does, so I just left or right click based on how I want the fill.

If you have a pattern established then you can left-click & drag to get the series also. Fill the first 2 cells and then highlight both and when you left-click drag you get the series. I responded for the person who was filling the first cell and trying to run the series. If there is a way to get Excel to run the sequential series with just 1 cell populated, then I'm not sure other then the right-click drag.

Try typing 1 followed by some random text, then left-click drag it. You'll see what I mean.

Eg: 1 star gets dragged down to '2 star', '3 start' etc.
