It isn't a strategy rpg like Disgaea, FF Tactics, Fire Emblem, etc... It's just a MMORPG with turn based combat similar to the main Final Fantasy games and other JRPGs. You don't place your guys and move them around to make use of elevation, cover, line of sight, etc... That would be kind of cool, though.
The stats thing I'm not really sure about. The best I could figure you get this potion thing from drops that you can use on yourself or one of your mercenaries if you have bonus points, which I assume you get from leveling. It seems to add to one of the stats at random? O_o I could be totally wrong there since I didn't play all that much, but it really isn't very intuitive.
The skills similarly come from drops, at least all I've seen of the skills anyway. Each class starts with one magic ability and you can upgrade it with books you get from drops if you have the ability points. I never got anything more than the original skills, but I guess new skills will come from drops too. There are also consumable scrolls you can use in battle which do various things like attack magic, confusion, etc...
That's about all I got out of it. I didn't make it past level 10 or so though and I've already given it up, but give it a shot you may like it.
