If your standing far away and suddenly a bunch of mobs come running after you, it gonna be a wild goose chase. If you are standing in the AoE range, fighters can easily mock the mobs back, mages can easily magic burst (or w/e) the mobs back, and archers can of course mist.
(this is of course is in the thought that you are partying with lvl51+ people XD )

I agree, depending on the situation, if i pull aggro i will go on the attack or take it to the main mob where the main tankers can grab it.
But this is off topic "is it the clerics fault?" The only one that can truely answer that question is the cleric involved and their hindsight as to what else they could have done to prevent the death.
