academy is like a sub guild
its for players below level 40
everytime an academy member levels up, the entire guild gets an 1hr buff that increases our attack and defense
also, when the academy member levels up, points are earned. At the end of 7days (Thursday I believe, unless they changed it) the top 10 guild with the most points get a week long buff
To motivate academy members to level up, the guild/academy master can set gifts for the academy members every time they level up and when they graduate. Gifts are usually some money and scrolls.

Oh, so since i 'm going to start a new player, ocean is going to get a lot of buffs? And can you be in the academy and a guild at the same time?

You can only be in the academy or the guild, not both.. Once you reach level 40 and you'd like to stay with the guild you can ask one of the admins to invite you. Atm players aren't automatically let into the guild... so you have to let them know, quit academy then have them invite you. Wish OS would fix this but yeah.

Open up your guild window with 'G'. Right beside the icon there is an academy icon in green. Bottom of the window there is Enroll Academy. Type in 'ocean' (all lower case) and you'll be able to join.
