If someone says they're a pathological liar, do you believe them?

One of the main diagnostic criteria of being pathological is that the lies tend to present the liar in a good light, if memory serves. It's been a while since I've taken any psych courses. That means they wouldn't identify themselves as being pathological. I suppose there are always cases that break the rule, but it was a general rule of thumb.

really? i thought it was just usually a bid at attention, though that might be something else... maybe munchausens?
EDIT: Looked it up on wikipedia, and munchausen's would be more accurate. so replace the two words in your mind.... then again, the former joke still stands if you just take out the pathological part, seeing as you couldnt trust them either way.
so, the revised joke:
if someone said they lied all the time, would you believe them?

I wouldn't doubt the underlying reason one would become a pathological liar is seeking of attention, but the lies tend to make the liar look like a better person. Things like being a war hero, saving people, being smarter than they actually are...things like that.

While i agree with you, isnt it also true that in a large minority of cases, people will go for any attention whatsoever, good or bad?

That would be a generic attention-seeking behavior, whereas we were talking specifically about pseudologia fantastica.

But its defining characteristic isnt the connotation that goes with it, but rather the action itself, correct?
Then again, im no psych major, so...
