I messed up somewhere. Stuff always looks good in the image editor, but when I try to actually use it, it always comes out wrong. Anyone seeing what I'm not doing right?

Might wanna save it as a different file? PNG always makes anything look great.

Also when you save the picture, or before you save it you might wanna check thats its completely clean. I could see that your current sig is not a very good scan. Maybe getting a better picture would work.

I also you do some extra cleaning on my pictures before they go anywhere.

Ah, you cleaned manga for a time too? I've lost most of my talent in the field.

Basically, if something looks 'good' in image preview/editor, then it'll turn out to be about 'fair' in my experience with PS. If it looks exceptional, it'll be closer to the quality that your looking for.

I should get back into the spirit of making signatures with actual renders and such.

Yes, try to follow the advice of everyone who has posted. These are some good tips. The only thing I want to add though is to tell you that saving graphics in .PNG can be a pain if you have alot of effects or many renders.
The first ever Betterman sig I created was like close to 4.2 megs possibly, this being due to many splashes I had lol

@Kyrillos: Yeah it took me a while to get stuff done. So i just translate now. So much easier.

@Kitager: Why not save a copy and then flatten another one. Then save.

I think its the quality of the image...or maybe just how you are resizing it. What are you using to resize it? I dont really recommend resizing by hand unless you are really good with dimensions

When resizing hold the shift button to keep the proportions if you are using Photoshop use the percentage chain when resizing.

Check this site for better quality renders: Planet Renders.

You'll need to sign up and save the .png file and then open it up with photoshop to use, etc. Don't double click on the image... might open up too many windows. :3
