It depends on your processor really. A 32 bit processor uses a 32 bit address bus which means it can only really communicate effectively with 4 GB of RAM. 32 bit has been used for many years, but now with greater demands, 64 bit systems have come out. Your OS, if 64 bit can fully utilize your 64 bit processor's power. I think a 32 bit OS should work on any system though. If your processor is an Intel, I think anything below Core i3 is a 32 bit and anything above is a 64 bit. Core i3 itself though could be either, you'll have to check.
