Programming

Would someone happen to be a programmer or is in the works of becoming a programmer?

I majored in Computer Engineering. Had a good deal of programming. Granted, it's been ten years and I haven't really worked in the field, but I might can answer some basics.

@all of you
How did you get started learning. I've been wanting to learn programming for a long time for developing apps and possibly becoming a programmer when I grow up and I want to start learning right now. I don't do my homework so I guess I could use that time I do nothing to be productive. But I can never just get started. I dled a pdf of a book on how to program C something, or maybe just C and I just couldn't get on it. I never could get past the Hello World part. After that it was just a bunch of mumble jumble. I've read online and a lot of people say to go to guides and books online though they're all the same thing. Confusing as hell. So I'm just wondering, how did you get started learning how to program? Is it something I should just wait for in college where I can have an instructor I can ask questions and such? Or is there some hidden secret answer to learn it more easily.

PHP (the programming language this page youre reading was generated with) is how I got started.

echo "Hello World";

Cant get much simpler than that.

I got started with a high-school education program called "Turing" and then moved to Java. Bear in mind, the most important skills you will need is mathematical logic and lots of attention and patience.
Is there anything specific you wanna learn?

I'm in my second year of a computer science and engineering course, so I might be more in touch with the subject, (though Hrae and Belaslav are probably a lot cooler than me at it). I agree with you, I found the books to be a whole lot of mumbo jumbo, but once you get the basics right, any language will be easy. All you really need to be a programmer is a good sense of logic, and an understanding of the little nuances of the language on which you are working.

Once you've got that, moving to another language is very easy, since you only have to discover the differences in syntax and keywords. C is a good language to start with IMO since it is just easy enough to grasp as a beginner, but not too easy that moving to another language like Java will be too overwhelming.

I don't know about others, but I'm absolutely in love with programming. I get a nice sense of fulfillment when I successfully complete a program that does what it's supposed to do. So if you start to feel the same way, then don't hesitate to make a career out of it.

I used to have a magazine subscription that would send out programs in BASIC. That's where I got my start. Took a programming class in high school (COBOL) then started learning HTML from books. Eventually picked up a lot of JavaScript and PHP. Also took classes in college for C++, VBasic, stuff like that. I don't find any joy in it, unfortunately. Just an acquired skill.

I like logic, but the math you can have. Meh.
