Help me get this straight..?

It's about our supposedly new National Broadband Network (NBN).

Apparently the Govt is proposing (or already implemented in some parts of the country) that the NBN is something that you will just get unless you opt out. If you have opted out, you'll potentially need to pay $300.00 to hook yourself up to the old copper network.

Is that that it's saying?

So people are complaining that they're getting a new fast network for free, and that they had to pay $300 to stay on the old technology?

So, they are footing the bill now for you to change to this new network.

But if you decide to stay on the old one... when the current providers get rid of their copper network, those who opted out will have to pay the $300 to connect to the new one.

You're not paying the 300 to stay connected. You'll be paying if and when their current providers no longer support the copper network. TL;DL, make the switch while the gov't is paying for it.
