Kids tout their tech skills

SANTA CRUZ -- Legoland is not what it used to be and few people are better equipped to show how far the world of plastic-linking rectangle construction has evolved than Andrew Adelman, one of several local youth invited to present his tech-related endeavors at the inaugural Kids in Tech showcase tonight at the Santa Cruz New Tech Meetup.

Eva Kurtz, 12, will be displaying detailed nature illustrations of wild felines digitally painted on a tablet with Adobe Photoshop.

"I've been drawing since I was a little kid," Kurtz said. "Usually I draw animals, lions and tigers and jaguars.

Kai Tamkum, a self-taught coder, will be introducing the latest version of his Web server that lists files and lets users play music. Eventually, users should be able to edit files, view source code of other programs and operate as a site where people manage their own Web servers.

Tamkum started teaching himself how to code when he was in the sixth grade. "I started just learning HTML and then found it was just too boring," he said. "I wanted to make something that actually does something." During his sometimes six hours a day on the computer, he has created an online discussion board and developed Web sites such as youreofftask.com.

"It's sort of exciting and fun. It gives me something to do."

On the very practical side, Tamkum notes his tech skills will be marketable. "It's not like learning football because barely anybody gets on the NFL," he said. "You're much more likely to get a programming job than a job in football."

Ha. Good on 'em. I started programming about the same age. Of course all I had available was COBAL and FORTRAN.
