Modern Day Communication
Yes, this is a weird topic. I was bored during grinding and was watching a shout conversation.
And for those of you from GZF, beware of wall of text. If you want to avoid wall of text, read last paragraph. Or post "didn't read" like everyone in GZF. Anyways...
<wall of text>
What exactly motivates people to use shorthand nowadays in games, texting, or whatever else in communication with others? I can understand substitution of "u" for "you" - to me, it's being lazy. Some others I can understand as well, like "n" for "and". Such an example is a popular American restaurant (ok, unpopular if you don't like it) Steak n' Shake, which is predominate in the Midwest and East Coast. However, others I don't get at all.
One of them is "ne1". I mean, you might get sick of typing out "anyone" if you use that phrase, but what? It takes 3 seconds longer to type? It also looks nicer. Another is simply to, too, or two. I can understand "2" for "two", but for "to" and "too" also? It looks stupid to me, to be honest (tbh? yet another lol...and another right there) "im going 2 school".
And some seem to me like a wannabe trend on its own. Yes, I'm from GunZ, heard about Fiesta from Guntrix in May. Anyways, now in ijji, there's a new trend, don't really know if it happens elsewhere...kik. Not kick, kik. Wow. Is it really hard to add a "-c"? I join half the games in Soldier Front, a few rounds in and... "kik trmph he use aimbot". Well of course you can't kick in a middle of a game in Soldier Front, but I see "kik" way more often than "kick". It happens even in GunZ, when you play against newer players...K-Style them a few times, they go "zomg kik haker". Hell, I've been kicked by level 50s in GunZ for utterly raping them in two hits.
In conclusion: What makes people take shorthand and transform it so much that it's barely recognizable English? It spreads like a bonfire - One person starts it, then others catch on to it, and younger players and newer players alike think that it's the proper way to type, and boom. You have shorthand from 95% of the online gaming community. I mean, in GunZ, yeah, if you can shorthand to save a second in a clan war, I can see doing it. But in casual conversation? Is there a point? Maybe it's us, the current gaming community, that ends up influencing newer and younger players alike. Maybe in fifty years everyone will revert to shorthand and laugh at people from the 90s to now who use standard English.

P.S. Gotta love drama. I just realized I threw in a fair share of it.

It started when people had to type as quickly as possible, whether to guard their flank in an FPS or to stay on topic in an IM. Then it became a habit, and seeing as people are monkeys in disguise, they copied those people and shorthand became a fad.

Ok, anyways about the word 'kik'...it's like it's with d*ck and dik ^^
Umm, why i started typing properly was because of my english teacher xD
Lmao have you been to situations when you say 'gotta' 'wanna' instead of 'got to' and 'want to' during the lessons ? ^^
Haha, and i used to type w/o 'h' because it was somehow hard to find 0.o
So...i dont know what i'm even talking about =]

Stupidity, laziness, conformity. Anyway, don't be concerned. A majority of the time, writing like that online is just a phase. Hell I went through it once upon a time. Whilst the number of people writing like this seems endless, over time the misuse of the english language will fizzle out. The day the urban dictionary replaces our english dictionary won't ever come. It just can't.

I just live and let live. If someone wants to look like an uneducated 12 year old, then let them. There's nothing you can do to stop them, other than influence the up coming generation. Literacy has caught on a whole lot more than we know, thankfully, and hopefully illteracy in the online world will only be left to the lowest of low.

Some of it bugs me, some of it doesn't. The really common ones like lol and brb don't bother me and even I use them all the time. Ones like kik instead of kick and ne1 annoy me somewhat. ne1 takes me longer to type than anyone does because I have to slightly displace my hand to hit the 1 and then reposition, lol.
Also, kthxbai, or some other form of that gets under my skin. Every time I see that I think of a some arrogant little kid with no respect for other people. I think because I most often see it punctuating volleys in a flame war.
I really despise the stuff where they intentionally misspell words or insert numbers or other unusual characters in place of letters; heavy leetspeak is nauseating. It's just moronic and can only take longer to type. Usually when I see writing like that I don't bother trying to read it.

I was afraid you were an undercover spy from the darkside until I read that disclaimer. Thank God our Pritcher's still with us.

If I'm not wrong, the origins of 'chatspeak' can be traced back to the telegram, where you could only put in ten words in a message. With the invention of the handphone, this became even worse. To me, the reason why we have chatspeak is a combination of convenience and laziness.
P/S: I do not like most chatspeak.
