This makes me think of my photography class... my teacher told me that the $250 camera that I've owned for years should suffice. THEN when he found out it didn't fully function like an SLR, he told me I'll need to get a DSLR ($400 minimum). But I stubbornly went through that class with my cheap camera.

Were you guys learning F stop and shutter speed and all that? I guess not all the compact cameras have those functions, especially manual focusing... so you don't learn how to take pictures with manual settings...

Yeah, but I already knew how to work that x.x plus my camera did have SOME manual settings, just not as much. The upside to DSLRs is you can see how your picture turned out and can hopefully get another chance. We didn't use DSLRs in my high school photography class.
