It's surprising how immature these people are. But as someone mentioned it's better to just quit the party there and find another one later. Treasure chests only appear once in a while so get the loot. :P
The other time I found a treasure chest in CP just sitting there. What I should've done was to kill the Colls near it but I just went to it and figured I'd just pot/stone. But of course I died with a Kebing pet right beside me and some gold ores. Damn, that sucked... cause those drops were better than anything I've come across with treasure chests. Oh well. I rushed back but it was taken of course... though it seemed that some jerks picked it up and was bragging so that didn't make me feel any better. D:
