The dad of the little Japanese girl I used to watch said he did it for family. He's American and living in Japan, and he uploaded them so his family in America could watch her grow up, and then they gained a following.
Plus, I think if you take even a small part in watching a baby grow into a child, you form a little attachment to them. Maybe not like a family member, but you still feel a small sense of joy in watching them go through all of their milestones and seeing how they change and you wish to keep watching them.
