Could have been salt water. In China, I've been to a place where they dipped apple in salt water before serving it so it doesn't go brown. Not sure if koreans would do that too.

I guess it's to preserve it but that sounds icky >< I would say if you're going to eat in it a couple hours then do that then rinse it, but the apples probably absorbed the salt water already :P
