You made a common misconception, I don't blame you for it... The shadow has a specific table of stats, the armor is just there for show. Also, I didn't really find it hard myself (truth be told I had a guardian buff for 1k hp and sp :P). Truth be told, it's quite a waste to lvl 3 extras... It adds the the thrill :P
