While I agree that the UK probably wouldn't fall apart without the Royal Family, it's still an important part of their shared national history. And a lot of people do care about them, as evidenced by the 500,000 people who tried to get a glimpse of the balcony.

And I don't agree that the Royal Family don't serve any purpose either. I think the Royal Wedding was as much a private celebration of Kate and Will's wedding as a very public celebration of British pride.

A lot of my friends here in the states were like "Why should we care???" If you don't, then don't watch... but it's not like this happens everyday in the Western world. In one way or another, plenty of people can find a justifiable reason to watch and be interested. They didn't start making a big deal until the last month which isn't too bad. I find election seasons more annoying.
