Y'see what you're supposed to do is fumble about in the kitchen dropping stuff and burning things; toss out a few random swear words and generally make a mess of things until she gets irritated enough to throw you out of the kitchen and do it herself. But in the back of her mind she still thinks, "well he was sweet to try, bless his heart". Then you get to go watch tv or whatever.
Remember the smartest of men know how and when to appear incredibly stupid.
