Ram is not what you might call a "vital" piece of hardware for performance. For a 32 bit system the max ram you can use is 4 Gb. I have a dual core myself and the 3 Gb of ram preinstalled suited all of my needs so far. So an extra ram stick won't hurt, but you won't see any significant improvements.
