That way reduces the amount of spambots that pick up on your e-mail address.
Edit: Now that I look at the link, the link is an actual mailto. She's trying to reduce spambot flooding but is clueless.
Edit again: If I ever post my e-mail address in an open place on the web, I always use a graphic for the @ and the . to reduce the amount of spam. If you don't, you'll get hundreds of thousands a day, even on a rather obscure page. The spam bots are relentless.
