Opening it should not void your warranty. Irregardless, having a technician do it is always a better option. I do consider myself in the top 1% of computer users, and I sometimes have technicians come by to do the work, even though I probably know more about computers than some of them. I'm not going to be humble; that's the truth. Why do I do this?
Because if something screws up, I can point fingers. Throw in a technical argument instead of a vague "he put that card thing in that slot," and you pretty much win every battle against customer support.
