Eh, in an absolute socialistic society, there really isn't any sort of motivation for people to make improvements to society. For the sake of their fellow man? Puh-lease. That wouldn't motivate me to get out of bed in the morning. Perhaps it would work for some people, but not for the vast majority of us.
I'm not going all Ayn Rand "Objectivist" here, mind you I think the American system, a hybrid of capitalism and socialism, is probably the best man-created system possible, aside from an absolutely benevolent dictatorship.
And before someone jumps in and says there isn't anything socialistic about the American system needs to look around. Roads, libraries, some hospitals, the military, the postal service, municipal airports, police, fire departments...those are collectivist programs.
