I'm a huge fan of wiping and reinstalling. Try that.
Windows 7 is coming out for the mainstream consumer market on October 22. Might as well do a clean slate installation of Windows 7 anyways.
From personal experience, I can say Windows 7 is much better than Vista. Improved battery life too, three months on build 7600 and I can say I've consistently seen an extra hour on my laptop.
