it depens on your relationship with your family and what you know about them. he could've had a good relationship with his mother and may hae thought she would be accepting/supportive whatever. maybe he just wanted to tell someone and she was the only one he thought wasn't too homophobic to tell. idk. i know that if for some reason i decided to tell someone in my family it would come down to either my mother, aunt, or cousin.
