It's possible when the trail of impact misses critical regions of the brain, especially if the primitive brain (midbrain, medulla, etc.) is intact as the structures in this region regulates primary functions such as breathing. It's extremely rare but several survival tales exist. The post-surgery implications, however, will mean changes in behaviours and emotions, or summarily, personalities and/or even motor deficits.
