It's certainly an odd feeling being in costume and other people don't know about an event going on. I've had to get gas a few times on my way to a Renaissance Festival and people think you've gone mad.
If anyone does plan on going somewhere costumed, I highly suggest bringing a set of civilian clothing in case things go awry.
