Eh, a tangent.
I think that cigarette-smoking is essentially more harmful than alcohol-consumption because cigarettes harm you even if you use them the way they're intended, alcohol in moderation does little harm by comparison. It has been shown also to have some benificial effects in small quantities.
People know not to overdrink or drink before driving/physical/mental tasks. There are clear and obvious effects on the body, mind and personality. There is little or no consequence in moderation. On the other side, there is no mid-point with cigarettes.
