I would probably think they are trying to say something and I'm just hearing them wrong before thinking they are calling me Esen.
Today one of my professors called me Jess and I was a bit unsure if he was talking to me. Most people call me Jessica (except my relatives that don't speak English and a few others), though my dad occasionally calls me Jessie. I just didn't noticed when he does at first. I barely realized it last year.
