Scan through the guides section, and take a peek at the wiki on this site to get a feel for the game before jumping in.
I think all classes have their selling points, but I found that the cleric was the least money intensive class, because they can heal themselves and don't need to use stones or potions as often. They were fairly slow levelers solo, but always welcomed in a group.
I personally like the archer, but I think that may not be the best class for a beginner. No you don't have to buy arrows, but you may need to buy stones and potions often if you solo. If you do a little reading before hand then you can do well with any class. I've never been beyond about level 20-25 with any class though and I haven't played much since it went open beta.
